Three thousand grit is the finest grade in the range and it does not shape anything: it refines a surface that is already close to finished. On a fresh respray that means levelling orange peel, taking out a dust nib or a light run, and flattening the clear so it can be compounded to a mirror. It is the grade that turns a decent paint job into a good one. The same paper restores clouded headlight lenses as the last step before polishing, and finishes acrylic, resin and plastics on general DIY and modelmaking jobs.For best results, use wet and use it gently. Fold it over a soft pad or a block so pressure spreads evenly, keep the surface flooded, and let the paper do the work rather than leaning on it. It will leave a uniform matt haze, and that haze is meant to be there: a cutting compound removes it and brings the gloss up.One thing to watch. Clear coat is thinner than it looks, and sanding through it means a respray of that panel rather than a polish.
