For optimal results, sow nasturtium seeds directly outdoors between March and May. Select a location that receives full sun and has well-drained soil. Prepare the soil to a fine tilth and sow seeds thinly, burying them to a depth of 20mm in rows spaced 30cm apart. Cover with the same depth of soil. Regular watering is crucial, particularly during dry spells. Germination typically occurs within 7 to 12 days. Once seedlings are robust enough to handle, thin them to 30cm apart. Alternatively, seeds can be started indoors at a temperature between 15 and 25°C. When the seedlings are adequately developed, transplant them and allow them to grow in cooler conditions until they are ready to be placed outdoors after the threat of frost has passed.
