Reaching just 50cm tall, ‘Switch Ophelia’ is uniquely compact, plus it flowers much earlier in the year than many other paniculata type Hydrangeas. As its name suggests, its bold blooms switch colour as they mature, opening as greenish white before taking on a pretty pink blush as summer progresses, before becoming rich pink towards the end of the season. This handsome Hydrangea is undemanding, but very rewarding to grow. Grow hydrangea plants in any non-alkaline, fertile, moist soil. Improve the soil prior to planting by adding with plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost, ensuring that it is mixed in thoroughly and deeply.Water regularly until plants are fully established. Leave the faded hydrangea flower heads in place until the new buds swell in spring to protect the delicate buds from frost damage. Prune after flowering, reducing the stems to restrict their growth to the available space and to improve the shape of the plant. If necessary, Hydrangea paniculata will tolerate hard pruning of the oldest stems to a few buds from ground level. This will also encourage larger flower heads to be produced. After pruning hydrangeas, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost around the base of the plant.
