It combines the Very First Reading series with First Reading Levels One and Two, guiding beginner readers from shared, help-along stories through to short tales they can tackle independently. Bright illustrations, rhyming text and carefully levelled vocabulary make this an ideal starter library for children moving from nursery rhymes and picture books towards confident, fluent reading at home or in the classroom, with plenty of variety to keep young learners motivated. About the Books The Usborne Very First Reading and First Reading series were developed with reading experts to support the early phonics and word-recognition skills taught in school. The first 22 titles come from Very First Reading, designed to be read together with an adult, using simple, rhythmic sentences and repetition so a child can join in even before they can decode every word alone. The next 12 titles, from First Reading Level One, introduce short, punchy stories with a slightly wider vocabulary, encouraging children to have their first go at reading unaided. The remaining 16 titles from First Reading Level Two build on this foundation with longer sentences, richer vocabulary and more varied storylines, drawing on Aesop's fables, traditional nursery rhymes and original tales alike. Each book is a manageable 32 pages, so children experience the satisfaction of finishing a whole story in one sitting, building confidence and reading stamina with every page turned. Colourful, characterful artwork throughout keeps young readers engaged, while consistent story structures and carefully levelled text support a smooth, steady progression through the entire Usborne Reading Programme. This set is a natural next step after early picture books and forms a firm foundation before children move on to Usborne's more advanced Young Reading titles further along their reading journey, making it an ideal all-in-one starter library for any home bookshelf. 50 paperback books covering two full levels of the Usborne Reading Programme Progresses gently from shared reading to independent reading Short, achievable 32-page stories build confidence and reading stamina Mix of original stories, traditional rhymes and classic fables keeps content varied Bright, engaging illustrations support comprehension and enjoyment Excellent value way to build a home reading library or support school phonics learning About the Author This collection brings together stories from a range of experienced Usborne authors and illustrators, including Mairi Mackinnon, who helped establish the phonics-based approach behind the Very First Reading series, alongside other trusted contributors to the wider First Reading range.
